Rachel’s Favourite Things: Winter 2014 Edition

I am a big fan of monthly favourite posts whether it be blogs or YouTube videos. I like getting suggestions of new products, new books to read, new series to watch on Netflix. I don’t actually get round to using or trying enough new things to warrant a monthly post on the topic but recently I have found myself a little stash of goodies that have made me smile so I thought I would share them with you because, lets face it, with the daylight hours getting shorter, we could all do with a little pick me up. So without further ado, here are my current winter favourites:

This little sparkly delight has the ability to revert me back to the mental age of about five. I wrote my name in sparkles!

This warms my soul as well as my tummy.

The List of My Desires by Grégoire Delacourt

This book is simple and heartbreakingly beautiful. To describe to someone else you might say its about a middle aged woman with an average life who wins the lottery. In reality it is so much more than that. It is about happiness, gratitude, dreams, contentment and realise that what others may views a mediocrity may be perfect in your eyes.

This book reminded me to appreciate what I have in my life.

I discovered this band at Reading Festival and since then I can’t stop listening to them. I went to see them again at Oslo in Hackney last week and they impressed me all over again. Definitely give them a listen: https://www.youtube.com/user/flytebanduk

I know I’m totally cool for including a card game in my favourites, you don’t have to tell me but this is not just a card game! The goal constantly changes and you have to use tactics and and cunning to win. Not only that but there are different versions including Zombie Fluxx, Star Fluxx, Pirate Fluxx (including a rule that means you have to talk like a pirate!), and so many more, you can even build your own!

So there you have it, a few things that have been putting a smile on my face recently.

What are a few of your favourite winter things?

  1. Wow, not many people know of Fluxx where I’m at. My husband and I found it on a relative’s dusty bookshelf while staying with them one night. We obsessively played for two months and after a few years of searching for our own copy, we found a deck! It is so much fun and I definitely want to get the expansions. If you have the expansions, tell me which is your favorite!

    1. My friend bought it on holiday and we played it everyday! I’ve played 4 versions now and my favourite is probably star fluxx but they are all very different. We bought zombie fluxx for a friends birthday and that’s a bit different too because the zombies can win! I’ve never actually played the original one.. I should try it.

      1. Oh, I will definitely look into the star fluxx! The original is fun but it is always nice to expand so you have more options. That’s when it gets interesting! It is mega addicting.

  2. Hat tip on the band Flyte suggestion. I have never heard of the band before but I am currently listening to some of there music while sipping on some coffee this morning. Also, I like the idea of a Monthly recap of favorites.

    1. They are incredible live if you ever get the chance to see them. My favourite songs of theirs are faithless and light me up. Enjoy!

  3. I’ve never heard of Fluxx. Sounds interesting, I’ll have to see if we have it here in the US. Do you guys have Cards Against Humanity? Now that is a crazy game!

    1. Yes! We do, I played it a lot whilst at uni. It is pretty crazy indeed and requires a particularly liberal sense of humour!

  4. indamixworldwide

Never heard of that famous Fluxx which you seem to buzz with, Rach. Probably because comin’ from an non-English speakin’ country. Anyway, you tickled my curiosity as on other topics in this selection of yours. Blessings 😉

  5. What a cute post! I have to check out that book, it sounds like the kind of thing I need to read right now. 🙂
